ABOUT LOVING OUR SCHOOLS

Loving Our Schools was founded on the idea that Christians should be out in the community beyond the four walls of the church, loving our neighbors as God first loved us. A relatively small investment in children often has the greatest potential for long-term transformation in our communities. Every community challenge is present in our local schools: from hunger to homelessness to poverty, trafficking, bullying, mental health, and more.

Partnering with schools makes it possible for churches to link arms with local schools to address these challenges in a focused, strategic way in the context of meaningful relationships. Each church doesn’t have to address every challenge, but every church can do something to help. By equipping churches to partner with local schools, the body of Christ in North Carolina can transform our communities for good together!

OUR CALLING

If your church closed tomorrow, would the neighborhood miss you?

  • As Christ Followers, we are to love God supremely, and love our neighbors as ourselves. (Luke 10:27) Tim Keller writes, in his sermon of the Good Samaritan, “The Church must squarely face its responsibility for the neighbors lying in the road.”
  • What Would Jesus Do? Luke 4:18 - “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free”
  • I John 3:17-18 “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”
  • Matt. 5:13-15. Be salt and light – these require proximity to be of use. Is the Church close enough, engaged enough today? Verse 16 concludes that people will see your good works and glorify God.

THE CHALLENGE

  • 25% of the children in Alamance County live in poverty. 55% are Economically Disadvantaged. These children face limited resources and significant challenges to academic achievement.
  • 61% enrolled in Free/Reduced Lunch. Indicator for limited food and nutrition, further impacting the ability to focus and learn.
  • 48% of 8th grade below proficiency in reading, writing, and math
  • 46% of students “At-risk” for high school graduation.
  • High school dropouts earn 35% less than graduates, more likely to be unemployed, and represent an average of $1.2 million negative impact on society.

THE SOLUTION

What would it look like if the Church was known more for what it is for, rather than what it is against? What would it look like if every school had a loving, caring, commited church partner?

  • Every church can have an effective, loving presence in a school
  • Smaller churches can partner together to meet the needs of the school
  • Larger churches can unite with other churches to mentor and provide infrastructure to help establish a partnership.
